What Odor Exorcism natural odor eliminator spray smells like

Over the last six months, we’ve done our fair share of sampling ODX to the masses at various farmers markets across Central Texas. (You can learn more about those here.)

What we are always paying close attention to when administering our free exorcism samples is the reaction we get to the smell of our formula.

Fragrance-free but not unscented

One of the first things we tell anyone who approaches our booth is that Odor Exorcism natural odor eliminator spray is fragrance-free but not unscented.

What’s the difference between a fragrance-free odor eliminator and an unscented odor eliminator?

Simply put, most home cleaning products—including most odor eliminators and air fresheners—contain ingredients within the broad and vague category known as fragrance. And don’t get us started on fragrance, because we’ve already written extensively about the malevolence of fragrance in home cleaning products, and if given the opportunity to do so, we would write some more about it. But that’s neither here, nor there.

The point is, Odor Exorcism is notably devoid of anything that comes close to falling under this nefarious ingredient category. It’s kind of our thing.

That omission, however, does not mean the formula doesn’t smell like anything at all. But we’ll get back to that…

Does an odor eliminator need to smell like something in order to effectively eliminate odors?

This is a seemingly simple question with a more complex answer.

The short answer is: no.

The long answer is: what an odor eliminator spray is supposed to do is right there in the name: eliminate odors. Most of the ingredients contained within a true odor eliminator product are not fragrant and do not emit aromas. That objective doesn’t imply any kind of aromatic theme or personality.

Take the odor eliminating ingredients in Odor Exorcism natural odor eliminator spray:

  • Sodium citrate: a pH balancing agent that reacts with stinky particles to balance them and get them closer to water, which is neutral
  • Alcohol: a mild anti-septic which interrupts bacterial processes, breaks down their molecular structures, and encourages drying (dry = good in the realm of odor elimination)

Neither of these ingredients feature any kind of aroma to speak of—they are scent-neutral.

As you can see, it is possible to procure a totally unscented odor eliminator product.

It’s just that Odor Exorcism isn’t one of them.

So what does Odor Exorcism smell like?

There are two ways to think about this question: what does ODX smell like in a literal sense, and what does the scent make you feel?

The literal scent of Odor Exorcism

The beautiful, fresh, sumptuous aroma of Odor Exorcism comes from three of world’s favorites and most timeless essential oils.

Top note: orange

Based on our highly scientific survey of market-goers over the last six months, orange is tied with lavender for the most frequently cited scent profile of our odor eliminator formula.

Filled with zest and limonene, orange is more than just a bright sun ray shining in your nose. The chemical compounds found specifically within orange peels contain mild antimicrobial properties which have been used by odor exorcists for centuries to clean and freshen.

Middle note: lavender

The original Latin word from which lavender derives literally means “to wash.” (Notice its similarity to the Spanish word for “wash,” which is lavar?)

Lavender has been beloved for centuries for its aromatnic properties, as well as for its usefulness as a mild disinfectant. We’re hardly the first exorcists to recognize its value. It’s no wonder the fresh, calming aroma of lavender has worked its way into all of our bottles.

Base note: frankincense

Travel far to the Horn of Africa, and you will likely come across the Boswellia tree.

From this beautiful, ancient flora comes the resinous and deeply valuable essential oil frankincense, which many of you might recognize as one of the gifts brought to Jesus by the three wise men. There’s a reason for that…

Especially in incense form, frankincense has long been considered sacred as a symbolic representation of prayers ascending to heaven. Throw a little in a bottle of Odor Exorcism natural odor eliminator spray, and you add a layer of depth that’s unmatched by lesser (and more synthetic) odor eliminators.

The feeling of the scent of Odor Exorcism

Now that we know where the scent of ODX literally comes from, we can shift our attention to capturing the feeling of smelling Odor Exorcism as described by those who have been curious enough to stop by our booths and smell it.

Clean

The word most frequently uttered after whiffing ODX is this: clean.

This is a fact that makes our little exorcist hearts swell with pride. After all, what’s better than the aromatic experience of feeling like the place you call home is clean?

Additionally, we’ve poured so much time, effort, energy, and research into formulating a natural odor eliminator spray product that actually is clean (there are no synthetic fragrance chemicals, as we have stated many times before) that there’s a symbolic victory there, too, of reinforcing cleanliness with our customers.

Fresh

The next most frequently used word to describe the experience of smelling ODX is fresh. (And most times in combination with clean.)

This one works for us, too, because frankly, our product is fresh. It’s made from recently distilled essential oils and complemented with fermented radish root to prolong the shelf life of the product.

Freshness is in our blood, and we’re proud to say, it’s also now in your odor eliminator bottle.

Subtle

Less frequently (though enough times to note), we hear our natural odor eliminator spray scent described as subtle or “not overwhelming.” We can only surmise that many of these sniffers are used to the fragrance overload of Febreze and expect to be accosted by that same level of olfactory intensity when sampling Odor Exorcism.

There is no such inescapable intensity in Odor Exorcism products, for a couple of reasons.

  1. It’s hard to achieve the level of scentinsity emitted by Febreze and other synthetic-fragranced odor eliminators using only natural ingredients.
  2. We don’t want the scent of Odor Exorcism to be inescapable, or to hang around for too long. The lovely scent should last as long as the essential oil droplets (and other odor-fighting ingredients) are doing their jobs, and then it should mosey on.

Conclusion

However you want to think about it, Odor Exorcism was created for three simple reasons: 1) to send bad smells to hell where they belong, 2) to do so naturally, and 3) to ignite your senses (especially the sniffy one) along the way.

Have we accomplished these goals? We think so, but if you don’t want to take our word for it, there’s only one way to find out…and that’s to try some for yourself!
